چکیده

Traditionally the Costa Rican historians and genealogists have interpreted that the Spanish ruling elite emerged after the conquest was exclusively of European origin. On the other side, recent technological advances in Genetics give us the opportunity to approach the study of pedigrees from a new perspective, examining alive people and simultaneously collating the historical information of their ancestors. In this paper, a complete matrilineal genealogy was reconstructed from nowadays"white"Costa Ricans to their ancestors in the early Colonial society (XVI century). It was compared the correlation between ethnic affiliations deduced from historical records with the genetic inheritance from maternal lineages. The MtDNA lineage observed corresponds to a Native American ancestry. These results show that some Amerindian gene flow into the Spanish group must have occurred since the first generation of Colonial society, a finding that contrasts with the prevailing ideas that the Spanish elite avoided the intermarriage with other ethnic groups. Examples like this one confirm that miscegenation began early in Costa Rica. So, those who considered themselves"Spaniards"in the late colonial era, were actually biologically mestizos. It is widely accepted, that the general Costa Rican population is the result of an admixture process between Europeans, Amerindians and Africans.

Implications of land management on soil microbial communities and nutrient cycle dynamics in the lowland tropical forest of northern Costa Rica

The long-term effects of reforestation versus maintained grassland on microbial community structure and nutrient cycling provide a valuable perspective on ecosystem health and carbon sequestration potential of tropical soils in the heavily deforested Northern Zone of Costa Rica. The soil from the secondary forests in this area had greater levels of phosphate, inorganic nitrogen, organic carbon,...

Interactions between populations of Rhizobium, Methanotrophs and Archaea in two different lowland tropical forest soil communities

Bacteria in the genus Rhizobium, methanogenic bacteria and Archaea are important in the terrestrial carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycle dynamics and the sequestration of C and N into the soil biomass. A better understanding of the functions of these microbial groups could provide some clarity on the impact of different land development practices and a changing climate on soil ecosystems. The comm...

Spring Migration Counts of Raptors and New World Vultures in Costa Rica

In both spring and autumn, millions of migratory birds of prey that breed mainly in North America, and overwinter mainly in South America, travel between these two continents via the Mesoamerican Land Corridor, numerically the most important raptor-migration flyway in the world. Although the flight has been well documented at migration bottlenecks in Veracruz, Mexico, and the canal region of Pa...
